But a large portion of the gaming market by revenue doesn't really care what the game looked like all that much uh in a sense that whatever we're doing today is good enough. So 10 years from now if the games look much better for some reason no one will really think of that as a huge differentiation differentiator in terms of sales.
But um I think the whole point of that project and the graphics was it isn't really just about a grid of pixels. It's the metaphor and the idea and the meaning behind everything.
Nvidia would be the top of that list not to make it. You know, this is long before you, but Nvidia's graphics architecture was precisely wrong. It's not a little bit wrong. We created an architecture that was precisely wrong.
GPUs are not nearly as restricted in their future progress as CPUs which are far more constrained in how they can physically improve (compiler-driven ILP only goes so far).
You can't calculate every photon in the scene. You need really detailed approximations, and that's the field of computer graphics. It's about increasingly effective approximations of the laws of physics, which are just totally intractable.
They do have flame graphs in Nsight Graphics for GPU workloads, although their flame graphs are currently shallow as it is GPU code only, and onerous to use as I believe it requires an interposer; on the plus side they have click-to-source.
It means that you have to extend yourself with empathy to the person you're seeking to serve, to the person who the work is for. If you exert the emotional labor to do those two things, sometimes you will have a successful creative outcome. That's a choice.
