For example, most people will operate in a way that maximizes the amount of money they will get and that minimizes the amount of work they have to do to get it. To see this, just leave someone unsupervised and allow them to bill you for what they have done. Be especially wary of this conflict of interest when people are advising you on matters that will affect how much money they earn--such as the lawyer who spends a lot of billable hours giving you advice, or the salesperson who advises you on what to purchase while receiving a commission on the amount that you spend. #principleoftheday Related

Democracy. It’s about giving people the power to shape the society they want to live in. Tomorrow, on Democracy Day, the @EU_Commission launches the “Shape our Democracy” campaign. To invite people to share their ideas. And to make our democracy stronger and more resilient, together. link.europa.eu

President of the French Republic since 2017.
English, from French From day one, I made a commitment: to protect our children online. We will see it through. Following the decision made by the Constitutional Council in mid-August on banning social media for under-15s, I had tasked the Prime Minister with finding a way forward that complied with the Council's observations and European law. This has been done. After rigorous technical work, the Government is today notifying the Commission of new submissions, one month after the Council's decision. This protection must also become the norm for all children…

I hope the proposals by frontier labs to pace AI research stem from a genuine concern for safety and a recognition of the potential risks posed by future models, rather than a strategic effort to consolidate power and permanently solidify the market dominance of a few top players. If these efforts are genuine, then oversight must take a more democratic and accountable form, with both national and international components, similar to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the US and the International Atomic Energy Agency internationally. If there is only one organization responsible for safety m… energy Related

I turn 50 today. This is a message to my kids but I offer it to you in case any of it rings useful. I was born in Sri Lanka in 1976 in a country that, at the time, was about to enter a decades long civil war. My father was able to get stationed at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canada for four years in the early 80s - when some of the fighting was most severe - and which from our vantage point in Canada gave us some respite from an otherwise omnipresent conflict. He came as a diplomat but then my father filed for refugee status after four years when his life was threatened by militants. We… Related

If you look at those things, they're kind of just bad programming practices. I I don't really know how else to say them. They don't mesh well when you put them together.

Started goofing around with mesh radios. Delighted to discover the tech immediately bifurcated into a slapfight between two competing protocols as per the ancient and sacred nerd traditions. Not having much luck with either of them to be honest. I can see lots of #meshtastic nodes from my home, but can't reliably communicate with any of them, and public channel is mostly silent. Not enough #meshcore coverage in my area for a fair try. Anyone else meshing in Portland? Related

What is a korrent?
A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one
sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at
korrents.com .
Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said.
The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in
korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who
else holds it.
Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public
statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post
Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they
do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in
this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.
The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the
serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to
quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter,
especially about tone.
Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked
article and a belief on korrents.com
are left in their original language.
