Took the train from Portland to Seattle today and ended up sitting next to Joann, a wonderful older lady with five kids and a dozen grandkids. We spent the entire three and a half hours talking about family, health, food, travel, and a million other little/big things. My faith in humanity meter is struggling lately, but our conversation really raised it. Related

Another week at @oxide.computer has given us (yet) another example of the kinds of problems that very much require human engineering. Today, the team joins @ahl.bsky.social and me to regale us with the wild tale. Join us live, 5p Pacific, tonight! discord.gg
Quoting @bcantrill.bsky.social I am surely not alone in having family over the weekend hitting me up asking "should I be worried about extinction?" As a response, I have found that my anti-Doomer talk from @monktoberfest.com 2023 (three very long years ago!) remains current and accessible: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQfJ... Related

10yo just learned about Lady Gaga by way of Weird Al. It happens! For a few years, this was the only version of Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” I’d ever heard: https://t.co/8ScXD9nbm8 The non-bluegrass version sounded very weird to me. Related

the most important skill is to be able to teach yourself something complicated from a youtube video. The other day, I met some parents, and they were super concerned about their 16-year-old daughter. The parents both went to very fancy colleges, and their daughter was not on the track to go to a very fancy college. They were lamenting that and were concerned about that. Then I happened to meet their daughter, and two things I noticed right away: (1) the daughter was a wonderful person, and she just seemed like a genuinely nice and caring young lady. The parents obviously did something right r… Related

RE: https://mastodon.social/@bcantrill/117220486316266236 Bryan makes important points, then veers into a convincing Pangram testimonial. Oxide is now requiring public statements to be Pangram-negative. #clankerslop Related

I love Tolstoy because you get a third of a way into his book about a lady having an affair and the best chapter is about a dude experiencing a state of "flow" while mowing a field with his country peasants.

So I've been experimenting with some 1:1 coaching, mostly from people who are close to FIRE but looking for a final checkup. Here are some of the things some people miss consistently: 1) If you're going to go to all the trouble of owning rental houses, the damned things should at least outperform the stock market. So make sure your cap rate is better than ~8% after all expenses. But this takes some skill, so I keep sending people to @CoachChadCarson's excellent all-in-one book on the subject, "The Small and Mighty Real Estate Investor" 2) If you're going to invest in stocks, you should unders… Related

What is a korrent?
A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one
sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at
korrents.com .
Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said.
The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in
korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who
else holds it.
Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public
statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post
Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they
do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in
this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.
The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the
serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to
quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter,
especially about tone.
Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked
article and a belief on korrents.com
are left in their original language.
