The AI naming curse strikes again. “AI Safety” firm made AI unsafe. “Effective Altruists” are both ineffective and enabling criminal activity. “Irregular” is regularly incompetent. Quoting @brianchau57 BREAKING: A single Israeli Effective Altruism firm is behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta cyberattacks 🧵 with help from @lumpenspace AI alignment Related

I hear roughly 3 reasons people keep working at AI labs despite believing in ~10% extinction risk: 1) Techno-determinism: Someone will build ASI no matter what, and I can do it better & more safely than China/OpenAI/etc 2) Consequentialism: ASI might kill us, but it also might produce utopia/immortality/superabundance, so it's a +EV bet 3) Self-interest: I am personally having fun & getting rich working on cool tech with friends. I don't think about the macro stuff. Notably, none of this is "I'm hyping up the risk for marketing reasons." People believe what they say, while being capable of a… Quoting @EvanHub Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to. We’re collectively realizing that experts, analog or digital, make strange decisions from time to time. Non-determinism, we learn, is both awesome and dreadful. It’s more powerful, but like people, these tools need active management (and resist it just like our best devs). Quoting @heyJordanParker Astra is such a weird model. 1. It makes better architectural decisions than Fable 2. It is more diligent & disciplined than Fable 3. It communicates better than Fable 4. Seems to compact better than every other model I've tested But also… 1. Is slow to answer 2. Is extremely slow & inefficient whe… Related

Excellent piece, very clear and accurate. Just what I've been saying! China's weak real effective exchange rate is a consequence of bad domestic macro policies, and appreciating the nominal rate without different macro policies won't get rid of deflationary pressures Quoting @GitaGopinath The Chinese yuan is no doubt undervalued. But demanding that China revalue the yuan gets both the diagnosis and the cure wrong. Our piece, with @pogourinchas & @helene_rey in the @TheEconomist is out: China Related

What is a korrent?
A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one
sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at
korrents.com .
Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said.
The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in
korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who
else holds it.
Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public
statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post
Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they
do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in
this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.
The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the
serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to
quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter,
especially about tone.
Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked
article and a belief on korrents.com
are left in their original language.
