The Creative Spirit of Who Framed Roger Rabbit I love Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the 1988 movie by Robert Zemeckis. I haven't watched it in quite a few years, and Cypress Frankenfeld just pointed out this sequence from early in the movie: It's a pelican riding a bicyc…

It seems intuitive that a solved problem is unquestionably better than an unsolved problem: a magic button which, when pressed, turns the latter into the former at no cost would thus seem to be a "free lunch" that there would be no hesitation in pressing. But even such a benign-seeming operation as answering a question can have irreversible costs. One familiar example is that of spoilers to a movie one is looking forward to watching: knowing key plot points in advance may permanently decrease your ability to enjoy the movie for the first time. Similarly, leaking information about a competitio… Related

I often see people say they haven’t seen a trailer for a new movie and are baffled why studios aren’t advertising to them. But I’ve seen that trailer six times at the cinema. So like maybe you’re not the target audience because you don’t go to the cinema. You’ll probably be advertised to once it’s streaming? I dunno. Related

Friday afternoon reminder to not empty your inbox at the expense of someone else's. I'll be headed down to Massachusetts to spend some time with my sister next week and I've already got my clipboard out and am making lists. Maybe I'll catch Super Troopers 3 at the local movie house. Either way, my mind is nowhere near my email. Fortunately it does not have to be. Image credit: Randolph Historical Society, on Flickr Commons flickr.com

Someone just sent this to me. I remember first seeing it back then in…an official WWDC QuickTime movie from Apple, distributed on optical discs, maybe? Anyway, can you imagine today’s Apple even keeping a moment like this in an “official” video? (Apple did keep @marcoarment’s bell in that one WWDC video, but that was a minor miracle.) youtube.com

What is a korrent?
A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one
sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at
korrents.com .
Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said.
The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in
korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who
else holds it.
Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public
statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post
Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they
do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in
this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.
The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the
serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to
quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter,
especially about tone.
Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked
article and a belief on korrents.com
are left in their original language.
