College in 2015, meeting after class to brainstorm for a campus humor magazine. Theme: unusual ways to get a haircut. I offered “get captured by ISIS” (a beheading video had just leaked). Audible groans around the table. Very bad of me! Related

This is the best piece of news from 2025 in my opinion: Solar is already close to being the world's biggest energy source, with about 3 TW (= 3000 nuclear power plants!!) worth of installed capacity. This graph from Science Magazine (link below) really says it all - because what do you think will happen next year, then ten years from now as solar keeps getting cheaper and cheaper? solar energy Related

AI: great expectations This time around I decided on a guest column. The guest is a 37 years ago younger me, and this post is one that I wrote for Manufacturing Engineering in March of 1988. It was for the last page of the trade magazine, in…

really happy to see my essay on Rosa Luxemburg’s herbarium in the latest issue of Lux Magazine (in very good company). It was a chance not only to consider her beautiful specimens, but also to read her letters from prison(s), a surprising mix of political fervor with mentions of “the titmouse with whom I am friendly.” You need a subscription to read it online, but imho Lux is something very worth subscribing to. I can’t remember the last time I read a magazine cover to cover 🫨 Related

Those who stick to the status quo will be left with average success at best. This book, by the one of the founders of Fast Company magazine, makes the case for this with some thought-provoking examples and stories.

Nota bene: Cover diversity When you take over a storied magazine, your first cover is important: it’s a public statement of who you are, what you stand for, what you hope to achieve.

What is a korrent?
A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one
sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at
korrents.com .
Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said.
The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in
korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who
else holds it.
Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public
statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post
Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they
do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in
this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.
The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the
serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to
quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter,
especially about tone.
Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked
article and a belief on korrents.com
are left in their original language.
