From one piece What if it’s not all about ‘screens’? 2 beliefs, in the piece's order there

korrents.com
Apple is a revolutionary company that, largely alone, made networked computing part of everyday life.

Apple

Their words

I sometimes wonder if we forget what a revolutionary company Apple is (I know people obsessed over this about 20 years ago, but far less so today). To state the obvious, all the pioneerings steps in the social domestication and popular cultural embedding of networked computing over the past thirty years (at least in the Global North) have been made largely thanks to one company.

Blaming ‘screens’ for cultural decline wrongly treats every screen, from cinema to smartphone, as a single thing.

Their words

The assumption that the screen (from cinema, via television, to smartphone) is a single thing is part of the problem here.

From one piece Make education boring again 2 beliefs, in the piece's order there

The media’s obsession with universities reflects a shortage of other ways of discussing society.

Their words

The problem isn’t with universities, it’s a shortage of other ways of discussing and addressing society.

Schools, even nurseries, should not be expected to spot which children will later be out of work.

AI and jobseducation

Their words

But there’s something mad about letting a broad socioeconomic crisis reflect backwards like this, to the point where potentially nursery school teachers are being expected to worry about exclusion from the labour market.

A lot of people have argued that The New Spirit of Capitalism is very far from a critique of capitalism.

This point links us to the work of Pierre Bourdieu and to David Graeber’s Debt, which I’ll come to in a minute.

What is a korrent?

A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at korrents.com.

Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said. The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who else holds it.

Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post

Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.

The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter, especially about tone.

Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked article and a belief on korrents.com are left in their original language.
