More on @hilbertspaess - by all accounts he seems sincere since we have many here who vouch for him. I don’t agree however that him or just a subset of the people who work on the pipeline of tokens we use everyday speak for everyone else in the industry.
With thousands of developed in a mono repo, it just does happen that one directory is missing one of the two files and this means that a subset of devs work with lobotomy. We fix this with automation but it’s a stupid complexity tax that shouldn’t have to be paid.
we find that the performance on held out tasks decreases dramatically. Whereas if we um just take out a random 20% of the data that's less diverse than the most diverse subset, the performance um only decreases a little bit. And so this suggests that actually having really diverse data plays an important role in enabling it to generalize to new tasks.
I think most domains are fundamentally pretty shallow where like a very smart generalist who's good at like a a limited subset of core skills can like get going pretty quickly.
