korrents.com
Corporations and governments are increasingly working together to monitor private communications.

Their words

We are moving into a world of unaccountable and secretive corporations that manage all our communications and work hand in hand with governments to make us visible to them.

Digital technologies may be causing a contraction in the quality of human communication.

Their words

Previous technologies have expanded communication. But the last round may be contracting it.

The abundance of information can impede the ability to focus or analyze it.

Their words

There is so much information that our ability to focus on any piece of it is interrupted by other information, so that we bathe in information but hardly absorb or analyse it.

From one piece Yes They Want to Kill Us: The Worshippers of Machines Versus Human Beings 2 beliefs, in the piece's order there

The tech industry's worldview often reduces human beings to mere brain functions that machines might perform better.

Their words

Inside the tech bubbles is a deeply flawed notion of our humanity that seems to reduce us to our brain functions, specifically brain functions that machines can do and maybe do better.

The vision of a post-human future where machines replace biological life is dismal and barren.

Their words

The vision of machines clacking away on a post-human planet in the near future is, to me, dismal and barren.

Hollywood and government plans often incorrectly assume that people panic or act selfishly during crises.

Their words

Hollywood movies and too many government pandemic plans still presume that most of us are cowards or brutes, that we panic, trample each other, rampage, or freeze helplessly in moments of crisis and chaos.

Panic is a rare phenomenon in disasters.

Their words

Careful research has led disaster sociologists to the conclude that panic is a vanishingly rare phenomenon in disasters, part of an elaborate mythology of our weakness.

In sudden disasters, people tend to revert to a default setting of solidarity and grassroots organizing.

courage

Their words

Given that reality, it's striking that in sudden disasters people seem to revert to a default setting of solidarity, generosity, bravery, and a glorious capacity for grassroots organizing to meet the needs of the moment.

Human nature is malleable and shaped by societal beliefs and values.

Their words

The simplest response to that is that there is no one human nature: we are a malleable species, much shaped by the beliefs and values of the society we're from, and the same society, even the same family, can produce wildly varying specimens of humanity.

What is a korrent?

A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at korrents.com.

Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said. The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who else holds it.

Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post

Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.

The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter, especially about tone.

Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked article and a belief on korrents.com are left in their original language.
