The use of LLMs may eventually lead to people losing the ability to know each other's true voices.

LLMs

Their words

Eventually your LLM will write your child a note and their LLM will write a reply and neither of you will actually know each other's voices.

Art serves as a tool to ensure historical events are remembered and cannot be erased from collective memory.

Their words

We make art as a warning. We make art as an anchor. We make sure that what is happening here will be remembered by those that come after us.

The bombing of small towns in war tends to be erased from collective memory through the use of vague terminology.

Their words

As the horror of war unfolds, the bombing of small towns tends to get sanded away from our collective memory, replaced with vague terms, because the collective noun for the bombing of small towns is war.

Museums are built for the purposes of preservation or to prevent the repetition of past mistakes.

Their words

There are generally two reasons why we build museums: to preserve things, or to not do them again.

People would be kinder to each other if they shared each other's food.

Their words

I genuinely think we'd be kinder to each other if we ate one another's food, as Anthony Bourdain used to say.

The ability to choose where one lives is a privilege that should be extended to everyone.

Their words

I'd like everyone to be able to choose where they live, and be safe where they choose to live.

The best way to deal with the feeling of being adrift is to focus on what others need rather than what one needs.

Psychotherapy

Their words

And over the years (along with much therapy) I've found that the best way to deal with this feeling, which can be incredibly lonely, is not to ask myself what I need, but to ask myself what others need. How can I be useful?

Being useful to others can serve as a mental health tool that provides a sense of purpose and necessity.

Their words

The thing about being useful is that it's a two way street. You figure out something that you can do to help your friends, your family, your community, and that's great. But being useful is also an amazing mental health trick. It makes you feel necessary. It gives you purpose.

Understimulating children can be beneficial for their development.

Their words

It troubles me that kids aren't allowed/encouraged/etc to be bored anymore. I'm a fan of understimulating children. Let them figure their way out of it.

The tech industry may be exacerbating loneliness by offering digital substitutes for human connection.

Their words

And the greatest sin of all might be a tech industry that's exploiting your loneliness by offering you friends that don't exist.

The pandemic has had a lasting impact on society.

Their words

The pandemic did things to us, and the fact that we, as a society, mostly decided to pretend it never happened, means that at some level it is still doing things to us.

The shift toward AI is being driven by management rather than being a worker-driven shift.

Their words

And while there are certainly workers who've embraced AI tools-I'll let them provide their own reasoning elsewhere-what I'm seeing is the opposite of a worker-driven shift. Management is driving the shift to AI.

The language used regarding AI adoption is similar to the language of coercion used in rape culture.

Their words

I am, however, comparing the language we use when discussing AI adoption to the language of rape culture. It's the language of coercion. Language that implies a lack of choice and reminds you of the power those who are using it have over you. A lack of agency.

What is a korrent?

A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at korrents.com.

Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said. The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who else holds it.

Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post

Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.

The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter, especially about tone.

Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked article and a belief on korrents.com are left in their original language.
