Their words
I have been fortunate to be have been alive for a while now but have never got around to going to see a total eclipse until 12 August this year. It was, in my view, well worth the trouble and expense.

Their words
I realise my assumption may be wrong, and that things change, but right now it looks as if the question of whether or not AI is actually capable of becoming sentient, and if so how far along that road things may be, is fast becoming (almost) beside the point.

Their words
My baseline assumption for some time has been that the idea that AI can become sentient or conscious (at least in the ways humans and [some/other/many] non human beings are) is ill-founded.

Ray Kurzweil's prediction of brain-scanning nanobots in our bloodstreams by 2030 is a stretch.Their words
There’s a mention of a prediction by Ray Kurzweil that by 2030 nanobots will be swimming through our bloodstreams and scanning our brains from the inside. This sounded like a stretch to me in 2010, and more so today.

This is, as I said, a rich field, and in addition to The Sounds of Life, I recommend Sounds Wild and Broken: Sonic Marvels, Evolution’s Creativity, and the Crisis of Sensory Extinction by David George Haskell.

The Sense of WonderTheir words
The Sense of Wonder is a short piece, barely more than an essay really, though it exists in book form, and it’s essentially just a celebration of being in the world.

The DeepTheir words
Claire Nouvian’s The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss is a large format, full colour bestiary of the real, containing photographs of a couple of hundred among the countless astonishing creatures that live beneath the shallow sunlit layer at the top of the world ocean.

Storms of My GrandchildrenTheir words
But if I had to recommend just one book it would be James Hansen’s Storms of My Grandchildren because it is, simultaneously, a good introduction to the science, a first-hand account of what it’s like to be on the receiving end of attempted sabotage by political operatives who know nothing about the science, and a very human call for action.
Nothing matches.
What is a korrent?
A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at korrents.com.
Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said. The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who else holds it.
Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.
About the English under a post
Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.
The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter, especially about tone.
Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked article and a belief on korrents.com are left in their original language.
