I will never stop feeling extremely smug when I look around at a landscape and think “huh, I wonder why it’s like this?” and later find out that there’s a very interesting historical reason it’s like this and actually it underlies the entire history of the region.
Perhaps this is a bold claim, but I think anyone writing about or from the southwest who isn't also in some way clocking how drought and rising temperatures and pollution are affecting the region is being disingenuous.

As the planet warms, the entire region's frozen mountain slopes are becoming less stable, making glacier collapses-and the catastrophic floods they can unleash-far more likely.
A rapidly warming climate and retreating glaciers are increasing risks of these sorts of events in the region, whether or not we can ultimately attribute this particular event.
