The evidence behind mainstream sleep advice is much weaker than sleep scientists and public health experts present it as being.
It appears that the evidence for all of these beliefs is much weaker than sleep scientists and public health experts want us to believe.

Changed their mind Most people sleep more than they need to, and are better off deliberately sleeping less.
Before I claim that if you sleep as much as you want, you’ll probably sleep too much and become more susceptible to depression.
Now while I still believe that the quality of the existing sleep science is extremely low, I advise against trying to decrease the amount of sleep you’re getting based on this article

Theses on Sleep Said 10 Feb 2022
A celebrated popular science book can consistently misrepresent the literature it summarises and contradict its own sources.
I found that the book consistently overstates the problem of lack of sleep, sometimes egregiously so. It misrepresents basic sleep research and contradicts its own sources.
Matthew Walker's "Why We Sleep" Is Riddled with Scientific and Factual Errors Said 15 Nov 2019
Getting the science wrong in a bestselling health book does real harm to the people who follow it.
Walker’s book has likely wasted thousands of hours of life and worsened the health of people who read it and took its recommendations at face value

Peer review is one of the things genuinely wrong with academia, not a safeguard that mostly works.
Specific parts of academia that seem to be problematic: rigid, punishing for deviation, career progression; peer review; need to constantly fundraise for professors.

Scientific progress in biology is not slowing down.
My (contrarian, I guess) intuition is that scientific progress in biology is not slowing down.

Short-termism and a lack of funding for young scientists are smaller problems in academia than outsiders assume.
Parts that seem to be less of a problem than I initially thought: short-termism; lack of funding for young scientists.

Academia has serious problems, but they are not as catastrophic as they look from outside it.
academia has a lot of problems and it could work much better. However, these problems are not as catastrophic as an outside perspective would suggest.

What is a korrent?
A korrent is a belief a person has stated in their own words: one sentence stating the claim, backed by a quote and a source, kept at korrents.com.
Under a name here, the quoted block is what they actually said. The korrent beneath it is the claim those words support, in korrents' wording — tap it to see the record, its source, and who else holds it.
Nobody here wrote their own korrents. They are compiled from public statements, and a person can change their mind, which is recorded too.

About the English under a post
Some people here publish in a language other than English. Where they do, this site shows a machine translation beneath the post, in this typeface — the site's own, not theirs.
The post itself is never changed, moved or hidden: what is set in the serif above is exactly what the person published, and it is what to quote them on. A translation can be wrong in ways that matter, especially about tone.
Only the post's own words are translated. A quoted post, a linked article and a belief on korrents.com are left in their original language.
